HOPES ON HIGH AT GOODHOPE FM (2015 WORK SHADOW)

DAY 3: Saturday 18 July 2015 – Good Hope FM (12h00 – 16h00)

Today I arrived at Good Hope FM which is situated in the SABC building in Beach Road, Sea Point. What a shock I got! The studio was nothing like I had imagined it. I had to register at security and then I was welcomed into the studio by Danilo with a hug and a hello. I put my bag down onthe floor and found a chair to sit down on. Today I didn’t get involved a lot as it was a hectic day in studio. It was Mandela Day and I had the honour and privilege of listening to the broadcast special in honour of Madiba. There were 3 “born frees” in studio sharing what Mandela day means to them and what they were going to do in honour of it, for their 67 minutes. I was shown some of the equipment and how to operate it and I was also able to watch some of the social media interactions.

DAY 4: Sunday 19 July 2015 – Good Hope FM (12h00 – 16h00)

Today I arrived at the studio and had to carry out the same procedure as yesterday. I got a lot more involved today than yesterday. I also wore my black stilettos as I thought they were more suitable than my boots that I wore yesterday. As the studio was a lot less busy and quieter, Danilo had more time and more of a chance of showing me the ins and outs of radio presenting and how to operate the equipment, for example, the RCR.

My mother’s observations:

Thanks to technology, I was able to watch Annika and her interactions with Danilo, the news presenter and other staff on Good Hope FM via webcam. I was at work, working on my laptop. It was very exciting experiencing all this in real time. Danilo gave Annika the opportunity to phone in to the radio station (she left the studio to do so) and she phoned in and spoke in French and gave her request for “See you Again” by Khalifa and Charlie Puth. A friend of hers phoned in beforehand also requesting a song. The radio team and Annika seemed so relaxed and they seemed to be having a great time. What a wonderful opportunity. I am grateful to Danilo for being so accommodating and sharing his journey as a radio presenter with Annika.
